The automotive industry sales numbers for August 2017 are a mixed bag. While the commercial vehicle and two-wheeler sales have stabilized, passenger vehicles (PV) seem to be on a slippery wicket. Some of this drop can be attributed to the post GST cess hike on mid-size and large cars as well as SUVs. Though customers made enquiries and were keen to place orders, inability to match demand due to production and supply constraints posed a hiccup during the month. A reason could be that the month of July had witnessed a spur in sales demand due to a slash in prices post GST enforcement, on vehicles across the board, due to which most of the inventory had been used up. However, with good monsoons and lower interest rates for vehicle financing now prevailing, the commercial vehicle market seems on the road to recovery. With the festive season around the corner, OE manufacturers are beefing up to meet an upsurge in sales, though some of the PV makers are cautious as well not sure of what the GST impact has in store for them.
