Transit retail to see three-fold growth by 2030 to $21.6 billion: Report

Date posted: Thursday 27 February 2020

New infrastructure development is prompting more retail space opportunities across various transport hubs including airports, highways, metro, railways and bus depots across the country and is estimated to grow manifold hereon. Driven by a healthy growth in passenger traffic and transport infrastructure, this transit retail opportunity is estimated to grow to $21.6 billion by 2030, while private operators are expected to see lease rental opportunity of $3.2 billion by then, showed a Knight Frank India report. Considering the current lease rent opportunity, the government could potentially monetise these transit – oriented retail assets to generate funding to the tune of $10 billion. According to experts, such monetisation will reduce dependencies on passenger tariffs and develop the retail eco-system for a largely unexplored territory. This will also open a new revenue stream for future infrastructure developments.
