The reason why change in India seems so lengthy and painful is not because Indians are blissfully unaware of the reality they are burdened with. They know exactly what the obstacles to change are. The issue, common to why many developing countries remain developing countries, is that there is in India a large anti-growth coalition. A coalition that wraps itself up in patriotism to fight tenaciously to keep things the way they are, so they can remain the big fish in small ponds. If India does not overcome the anti-growth coalition, its momentum will slow to a standstill and it will sink into the mud under the weight of introspection. The task of any new government, whatever its complexion, is not just to reimagine a future, but to find a path to it.
