Auto sales to register a double-digit growth in FY22 on a historically low base: ICRA

Date posted: Friday 16 October 2020

Passenger and commercial vehicle sales are projected to post double-digit growth next financial year after decadal low sales this fiscal, but the numbers would still not match those is FY20, according to rating and research agency ICRA. The coronavirus pandemic dragged automobile sales in India to historically low levels. After registering zero sales in April, the industry is yet to recover to monthly sales levels seen before the pandemic. FY21 sales are estimated to be decadal lows. ICRA predicts sales to increase by double-digits in FY22 given this year’s substantially low base. The agency estimates passenger vehicles sales to grow by over 15% to about 2.5 million cars in FY22 over an estimated base of 2.1 million units in FY21. However, this would still be 10% lower than the 2.78 million units sold in FY20 and 26% lower than the peak sales of 3.38 million units in FY19.
